Each of IT Training's Google App courses contains exercise files that you will use as you work through the course's content. These practice files will be included near the beginning of the page under the heading Copying the practice files. (The exact heading text may vary, depending on the type of file used for the course.) A link is included in this section that will copy the exercise files to your Google Drive account.
This page will help you with copying the exercise files for Google Apps courses, as well as provide additional assistance for using the exercise files to check your work.
About the practice files included in each course
Each section of content in an IT Training course is set up so that it can function as a stand-alone set of instructions, with the exercise files available for download at the beginning of each page. This makes it easy for you to work through individual sections of a course and only get the instructions you need — simply copy the practice files at the beginning of the section(s) of content you want to work through.
If you're working through an entire course, however, you only need to copy the practice files at the beginning. As you work through each section of content, you can keep using the same set of exercise files without needing to make a new copy every time you start a new section of content.
While most pages have the exercise files available to copy near the top of the page, some courses make use of additional files linked farther down in the content. Make sure to keep an eye out for these additional files, especially if you are working through an entire course and aren’t copying the practice files for each section of content.
Copying the practice files to your Google Drive
Before working through a section’s content, you'll want to copy the exercise files for that page to your Google Drive. The practice file link is set to force a copy to your Google Drive when you click on it.
The following steps will walk you through the process of copying an exercise file to your Google Drive.
- Open the page of content you want to work through and locate the section that’s titled Copying the (file type). (The full title may be something similar to “Copy the practice document” or “Copy the image”.)
- Expand the “Step 1. Copy the (file type).” accordion.
- To begin copying the practice file in a new browser window,
Right-click Copy (file type), Click Open in new window
A new browser window opens, and the file will begin to open. Before the document will open fully and can be edited, we need to make a copy of it.
- To copy the practice file, in the new browser window,
Click
The file will be copied to the top level of your Google Drive. The copied file will have the words “Copy of” at the beginning of the file name.
Checking your progress
You can use the practice files available for each section of a course to check your progress, if desired. The exercise files linked at the beginning of each section pick up where the previous one left off, making it possible to use the files for the following section to check your progress at the end of the one you're working on.
For example, if you're working through the course Spreadsheets: The Basics for Microsoft Excel, and want to check your work on the section Creating an Excel table, you can copy the exercise files for the following section, Sorting and filtering data, and compare your worksheet to the file for that section.
Additionally, if you are working through the content in Canvas, the Course Summary page at the end of each course contains a link to a file of the finished project. You can check your final project against this file.
