As we look at the image we notice that it has several issues common to home digital photographs. The flash has not filled the entire space, leaving the background very dark. Because of this, the gorilla that the photographer was trying to capture was left very dark and almost invisible.
We can also see a date stamp in the lower right corner. While this can sometimes be helpful, it doesn't make the photograph look very attractive. We will remove that.
We also see a very common problem that occurs with flash photography: red eye. This happens when the camera's flash creates red reflections in the eyes of those being photographed. Photoshop includes a tool to quickly fix this concern. Since this is the most obvious problem here, let's fix that first.
Using the Zoom Tool
Before we repair the red eye problem, it's important to understand how to navigate around the image. While we can clearly see the eyes in the image window, it will be much easier to target the issue if we can get closer to the problem.
Currently our entire image is visible. Let's zoom in so we can focus on the problem area.
Step1. To activate the Zoom tool, in the Tools panel,
Step2. To zoom out,
Press & Hold the Alt key, Click the canvas
Step3. To zoom in on the eyes of both figures, with the Zoom tool active,
Click the eyes several times
Repairing Red Eye
Now that we can see the eyes clearly, we can easily repair them with the Red Eye tool. This tool is not directly visible to us now; Photoshop offers more tools in the Tools panel than we can immediately see.
Many of the tools have a small black arrow in the corner, indicating that we can access additional, related tools by holding the mouse button down on the tool. In this way, we can find the Red Eye tool concealed under the Spot Healing Brush tool.
Let's see how to do this now.
Step1. To activate the Red Eye tool in the Tools panel,
Press & Hold
Step2. To select the Red Eye tool, in the pop up menu,
Step3. To repair the red eye, with the Red Eye tool active,
Click the center of each pupil
Step4. To save the file, on the Menu bar,
Click File, Click Save
Understanding the Spot Healing Brush
This image has several other concerns that we might want to repair, so we will be using several different types of healing tools to do this. In Photoshop, the healing tools are the group of tools we use to replace unwanted information in an image. Sometimes this can be damage to the physical picture, like a tear or spots. Other times this can be something that was captured by the camera, like blemishes or power lines in a beautiful landscape image.
We will encounter many more healing tools today, but for the moment let's repair our blemish.
Since we are zoomed in, we can see a small blemish on the man's lip. This will be easy to fix with the Spot Healing Brush tool. The Spot Healing Brush allows us to fix small blemishes. The Spot Healing Brush uses a Content-Aware healing algorithm in Photoshop to repair problems. Content-Aware looks at background information and uses it to fill in the space we're trying to cover up. It works best on small areas, but can also work well on larger areas if there is a lot of background information available to replace it.
Let's activate the tool.
Step1. To activate the Spot Healing Brush tool, in the Tools panel,
Press & Hold, Click
Discussing Brush Sizes
The Spot Healing Brush works by selecting a brush size and then clicking or pressing and dragging on the area we want to fix. Its brush size determines the size of the area the tool will repair with a single click. For this tool, we want our brush size to be just slightly larger than the area we want to repair.
We will resize our brush in the Options bar.
Step1. To resize the Brush, in the Options bar,
NOTE: Right-clicking with the Brush tool active will also bring up the brush options menu.
Step2. To alter the brush size, in the Size field,
Press & Drag the value, type: 8 Enter
Using the Spot Healing Brush
Now that we have the brush size set, we can use the Spot Healing Brush to repair the image.
