The Timeline panel is an important piece of the Premiere Pro interface, as this is where we assemble clips into a completed sequence. Let's take a closer look at the Timeline panel and its contents.
The following diagram highlights the most important elements of the Timeline panel:
The following table provides more information about each of these elements.
Features of the Timeline panel
Feature
Description
Sequence tabs
The sequence tabs display the titles of the currently open sequences. We can have multiple sequences open at once in the Timeline panel — if more than one sequence is open, the currently active sequence is shown with a line underneath the sequence’s name.
Playhead position
Shows the timecode for the current frame being displayed in the Program Monitor. Changing this value will move the Playhead on the timeline.
Playhead
Indicates the frame currently being displayed in the Program Monitor.
Time ruler
Measures a sequence’s time. The values displayed here may change, depending on whether you’re zoomed in or out of the sequence.
Video tracks
Area for placing video clips and/or still images you want to include in a sequence. Multiple tracks can be used for superimposing or mixing clips.
Audio tracks
Area for placing audio clips you want to include in a sequence. Multiple tracks can be used to mix or overlap clips.
Zoom scrollbar
Allows for zooming in and out on the active sequence in the Timeline panel, and allows for scrolling through a sequence’s contents if it’s longer than the visible area in the Timeline panel.
Zooming in and out on the Timeline panel
As you edit a sequence, you may find you need to zoom in on the sequence’s contents to perform some detailed edits on a clip — or you may want to zoom out so you can see the entire sequence at once on the Timeline panel. We can zoom in and out using the zoom scroll bar at the bottom of the Timeline panel. When we hover the mouse over the scrollbar, the zoom control handles will appear, as shown below:
We can press and drag these handles to zoom in and out on the sequence that’s open in the Timeline panel.
Since it may be necessary to zoom in and out on the Timeline panel often while editing a sequence’s contents, let’s take some time to practice using the zoom scroll bar.
To zoom in on the contents of the Timeline panel, at the bottom of the Timeline panel,
Point to the right zoom handle, Press & Drag handle to the left
To zoom out on the contents of the Timeline panel, at the bottom of the Timeline panel,
Point to the right zoom handle, Press & Drag handle all the way to the right side of the Timeline panel
Navigating in the Timeline panel
Another skill we’ll want to practice before we start editing the video is navigating in the Timeline panel. There are a few methods we can use to navigate to a specific frame on the timeline: we can use the Playhead Position timecode in the upper left corner of the Timeline panel, we can click on the time ruler to jump to a specific location, and we can press and drag the playhead to a specific location on the timeline. Let’s try navigating to different frames in the Main sequence using each of these techniques.
To move to the 40-second mark on the timeline, in the Playhead Position timecode at the top left corner of the Timeline panel,
Click , type: 00;00;40;00 Enter key
The playhead should jump to the 40-second mark on the timeline, and the frame displayed in the Program Monitor should display a frame showing the couple dancing with clasped hands raised up and to the right.
To jump to the middle of the clip on the timeline, in the time ruler,
Click on the time ruler at around the 1-minute mark
To move to the last frame of the clip on the timeline, using the playhead,
Press & Drag to the left until it reaches the beginning of the clip
Now we have a better understanding of the Timeline panel and how to navigate to different frames in a sequence.
